BOROUGH AFFAIRS
JANUARY MEETING HELD
WORK DURING MONTH
The first monthly meeting for the new year of the Borough Council took place last Monday evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) presiding. Present Crs S. S. Shapley, H. G. Warren, C. W. Good, C. S. Armstrong, and W. Sullivan. The Town Clerk (Mr L. Lovelock), the Foreman-Engineer (Mr W. S. Henderson) and the Inspector (Mr M. Penny) were also in attendance. New Post Office A letter from the Postmaster-Gen-eral replied to the recent representations from the Council for commencement on the work of building the new Post Office. It was stated that priority of building construction was now on a national basis whereby homes were given first place and civic and government buildings had to take a secondary position. The allocation of all government structures was in the hands of the Minister of Woi’ks. Everything possible was being done to have the new post office erected as soon as conditions permitted and it was hoped to put the work in hand during the present year. Cr Shapley pointed out that unless continued agitation was made the whole subject was likely to be shelved again. He noticed in several other centres, new post offices which had apparently been authorised where conditions were not nearly so urgent as in this town. On Cr Shapley’s motion it was decided to write the Minister of Works emphasising the urgency of Whakatane’s claims. Foreman’s Report The Foreman’s report for the month read as under:— Wainui Main Highway Hillcrest: Following compaction tar primer sprayed on 2300 square yards of this Highway. Two seal coats have yet to be applied. Muriwai Road, Heads: Further quantities of metal crushed and spread. Blading and watering for compaction is being intensified in preparation for sealing. Overhanging Growth: Cut back on Heads Road, Seaview Road, Wainui Hillcrest and pound hedges. Traffic and Parking Lines: Throughout Borough repainted. Playing equipment at play area and Heads repaired. This all requires repainting. Mower is working continuously on street sides.
Sealing Chips: Substantial quantities are required for the seal coats on Hillcrest and at Heads and quarrying and crushing is being pressed to obtain these. Every effort was made prior to and over the holidays to maintain the town’s street cleanliness.
Water Supply: Six new connections. Two bad faults developed in the main 9” main from reservoir one necessitating the replacement of 21’ of 9” main. On one 09casion I had to cut the town out of water for one hour. Grading, colfix repairs, refuse collection and dump maintenance, general. Committee Recommendation The following recommendations from the Finance Committee were adopted:— “That the Clerk and the Electrical Engineer draft plans and specifications and that tenders be called for the erection of a dwelling on the substation site, King Street.”—Mayor, Cr Good. “That Mr Hogg, builder, be invited to submit quotations and a price for the altering of the Council Chambers as per plan submitted.”— Crs Armstrong, Morpeth.
