THOROUGHBRED HORSES

DISTRICT-BRED YEARLINGS

PARADE AT WAIMANA

The five hundred persons who took advantage of the invitation extended by Messrs. F. J. Savage and Sons of Waimana, to visit the well known Tuhoe Stud last Sunday afternoon, witnessed a parade of thoroughbred horses which was entirely without precedent in this district—possibly the Bay of

Plenty: The weather was perfect and the crowd which was drawn from all parts of the Eastern Bay, evinced the greatest interest in the splendid exhibition of yearlings which will go forward to the Dominion Sales at Trentham. There were ten in all, sired, without exception by the stud sire, Revelation, an English thoroughbred reared in the stables of Lady Yule and imported by Savage and Sons in 1939 after a three months trip from the Old Country. The yearlings, seven fillies and three colts were magnificent. Perfectly turned out, they showed breeding in every line. As each was led into the ring they were the subject of an interesting commentary by Mr F. J. Savage. The ‘Revelation’ breed is fast coming into its own and should do much to blazon the name ‘Tuhoe’ among the topnotch stables of the Dominion. The dams utilised in the breeding from this sire were Calf, Seagar, Short Circuit, Galley Cook, Linquist, Uterace, Princess Josephine, Lone Flier, and Ipacca. A beautiful little chestnut filly from Short Circuit was announced as not for sale but likely' to be raced by the owners. Another by Ming Lu will be raced by Mr Reg Hodges formerly of the Whakatane Hotel who. has promised after her racing career to return her to the stud.

The magnificently presented stallion ‘Pictavia’ (Nearco Lovely Rose) and recently acquired by the stud from Sir Donald McAlpine in England took the eye of all present. Showing perfect symmetry and bone formation he should prove a worthy founder of a new blood line which will add to Tuhoe’s laurels. This splendid animal has a glint of bronze showing through his dark bay coat which gave the appearance of a metallic undercoat.'

Addressing the crowd Mr Savage said he hoped the exhibition would become an annual one which would help to promote a growing love and appreciation of horses in the district. He had been agreeably surprised at the number of horse-lov-ers who had taken advantage of the parade. The horses were now in the pink of condition and he hoped that they would help to re-establish the interest in and the promotion of the early race meetings which were once features of the Whakatane and Opotiki districts.

The Tuhoe Stud property was acquired by Mr F. J. Savage in 1912 when it was in its unbroken native state. It was farmed by its owner who successfully commenced the selective breeding of Jerseys some 14 years ago, and won a wide reputation for the high class of dairy cow which his stud produced. It is within comparatively reecnt years that F. J. Savage and Sons turned their attention to thoroughbred hoi’ses. With signal success the farm has been adapted to the specialised and delicate work of breeding from the finest strains available.

Today some sixty mares are running on the farm many with foal-at-foot, and numbering also some of the best brood mares from Australia. There is every reason to assume that ‘Tuhoe Stud’ will not only play its part in the racing world but will also prove a genuine asset to the district as a whole in the process. The owners are to be warmly congratulated on yesterday’s display and the splendid condition in which all horses were presented.
