BRIDGE BURNED

TE PUNA-OMOKOROA TRESTLE

MAIN LINE TRAFFIC BLOCKED Considerable inconvenience was cansed earlier in the week when all rail traffic between Te Puna and Omokoroa was held up on Saturday morning as the result of a fire bulling a portion of the woodwork on the long railway bridge between the two stations about seven miles west of Tauranga. The cause of the fire is unknown but it is suspected by the authorities that a spark from a passing engine some time previously started a slow fire which grew with the fanning of the steady breeze blowing in the locality for some hours. It did not take long—to suppress the outbreak and repairs were begun immediately. Passengers and mails were transported between the two stations by an emergency bus service.

Work was continued without a break by a special bridge crew from Auckland until Tuesday when the repairs were sufficiently advanced to allow a resumption of normal through traffic.
