Cruiser Bellona
Officers and ratings of H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona were entertained in Hawaiian style when the cruiser called at Pearl Harbour recently on her voyage from England to Auckland. Officers attended cocktail parties given by Rear-Admiral Edward W. Henson, Pearl Harbour commandant, and by the British Consul, Mr J. C. O’Dwyer. Ratings made tours of the island, and attended a recreation centre and dances in the evenings.
Rocket Enthusiast
One of the two designers of a passenger rocket which could take a man to the height of 190 miles, Mr R. A. Smith, of the British Interplanetary Society, was born in Ruawai, according to a letter from »a Ruawai resident. His parents, it is reported, still live in the district. As a boy he developed an interest in radio and joined a society “interested in communication r with Mars by radio.” Later he studied the possibilities of interplanetary travel and worked on experiments with V2 rockets.
