H . ——•— ■ ... *'■ EMPLOYMENT SUITABLE “The very satisfactory situation as regards employment of ex-service-men which was commented upon in my last report continues to exist and, in fact, the unsatisfied demand for labour is at present at the highest level since the cessation of hostilities,” .stated the report of the chairman, the Hon. C. F. Skinner, presented to the quarterly meeting of the Rehabilitation Council. “The ability of the country to satisfy this first need of the majority of ex-ser-vicemen has a beneficial effect on all aspects of the general rehabilitation scheme.”
The report, which reviewed progress made in all rehabilitaion fields, referred to the recent establishment of further trade training centres at Oamaru (carpentry), Dunedin (bricklaying and plastering), Miramar, Wellington (joinery), and Palmerston North (painting). Subsidised training had been extended to cover blacksmiths and farriers, horticulture, women’s hairdressing arid typewriter mechanics, while arrangements were made for ex-ser-vicefnen to attend a refresher course in baking. The report also referred at length to the facilities provided by the Blinded Servicemen’s Trust, as. agents of the Rehabilitation Board, at N.Z. St. Dunstans,. Auckland.
Altogether, at the end of October, there were, it was stated 2190 exservicemen being taught building trades at the Board’s centres, while a further 2695 were learning on subsidy with private employers in various trades and occupations. ■- -:4SSS
