GALA DAY HELD

ANNUAL SCHOOL FUNCTION The annual gala day organised and sponsored by the Whakatane District High School took place at the school last Friday afternoon, and from every point of view was quite successful. Although the support was not as good as that accorded last year, approximately £BO was netted, and the teachers and pupils responsible for the running of the day must be warmly congratulated. The public was first invited to watch - a drill and dancing display, by various classes of the schbol, and then to inspect a display of work by pupils. This latter included examples of sewing, woodwork, red cross knitting, notebooks etc., and was of an excellent standard.

Mr J. Wilson, Chairman of the Whakatane School Committee, delivered a short address, briefly welcoming parents and visitors to the school, and congratulated the teachers and pupils on their splendid effort.

A- ladies committee was responsible for the serving of a very tasty afternoon tea. Stalls were organised by fhe four ‘Houses’, viz. Matanga, Orakau, Hau Hau and Tera, whilst the Infants, and Young Farmers’ Cluh were also represented. The results of competitions run during the day were as follows:

Hau Hau: Cake, E. M. Waterhouse; two dolls (Bib and Bub) Mrs Murphy; box of sweets, Mrs Paterson; dinner, E. A. Chamberlain; mutton, R. Burr.

■ Tera: Clock golf, Mrs J. Boon. Orakau: Cake, M. Stokes; darts, R. Burt.,

Matanga: Cake, M. G. Murray; doll (Percy) N. Briggs; dinner, Mr Gordon; nail driving, Bruce Mundy (men), Mrs Kilgour (women); shooting, Don Bennett. (Prizes may be obtained at the school). -
