Hare Musical Instruments
Among the very few of their type in New/Zealand, two musical instruments more than 100 years old are in the possession of a New Plymouth resident, Mr F. B. Butler. They are • squares,, an instrument that appeared in the transition stage and before the first pianos appeared. One was made in England in 1833, and the other at Hamburg,. Germany, in 1780. The German instrument’s action is unlike that of either a piano or harpsicord, depending on gravity, but the English square has a piano action. The shapes of the "twp are almost identical.
