DISTRICT CUBS

RALLY AT EDGECUMBE FOUR PACKS COMPETE An interesting experiment was carried to a very successful issue at Edgecumbe last Saturday when the four District Cub Packs experienced their first Rally in the area and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the process. Besides the two packs from the town Edgecumbe and Thornton also contested and altogether some eighty Cubs took part in the competitions for the ‘Big John’ Shield which was recently donated by the Arbuckle family of Thornton.

Right from the inspection and jogpast in the morning the whole pro- . gramme went without a hitch a feature due largely to the excellent con trol by the Rally Chief, S.M. Don Scott, and the secretary, S. M. Nichols. The Edgecumbe ladies under the very able control of Mrs Fergusson . saw to the catering department which was no little undertaking whilst various committee members and friends assisted in staffing the field and in running the numerous . and interesting events. The Rally was a splendid mixture, of' games and actual scouting competitions. The boys made a good picture headed by their Akelas in the jog-past, and likewise harried out the full measure of their traditional Grand Howl. Their Jungle dances were also well worth watching. The well-constructed lairs drew very favourable comment from the Judges. ■ /

The Ambulance test which was • conducted by Mrs Cowie, drew the warmest praise from, that lady who commended the boys on the thorough grasp they had of their work and the absence of hesitation in ■ carrying out -their instructions. This very importanUitem saw Edgecumbe head the winning list with ‘a total of 10 points (the possible.) The programme concluded with the ‘Gold RUsh’, a spectacular dash to collect scraps of paper which had been broadcast by all the ladies present. *. .

The County Commissioner announced that the ‘Big John’ Shield had been won by Whakatane No. 1 pack, and called upon Mrs Arbuckle to present it to tlje Akela, Miss L. Dean. Cheers were given for the winners, for the donors, and the workers after which the impressive ceremony of ‘Taps’ was carried out to lowering of the flag. Details of the placings were as ' , 1
