EMPLOYMENT

BAY OF PLENTY SURVEY OCTOBER RETURNS The District Employment Officer, for the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty Area, Mr J. McGlone, advises that almost all employment returns have now been received and the work entailed in assembling the necessary data is well in hand. Because employers generally were appreciating the need for a Dominion-wide “Balance Sheet of Employment” they had been of great assistance to the Department in supplying the required information.

The information thus assembled, he continued, was already proving of immeasurable assistance in such matters as immigration, decentralisation, vocational guidance, trade training, etc. and industry generally would benefit to a great degree by the up-to-the-minute and reliable information being made available for the first time in New Zealand.

The following are some of the latest figures for the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty Area:— All Manufacturing Industries (includes Food and Drink groups, wood and metal work, clothing and footwear, paper, making, engineering, printing, etc. etc.) 145 units operate and employ 1.020 males and 216 females, an increase 'in personnel since April of 114 males and 23 females. In addition there are 153 working proprietors. Existing vacancies are for 69 males and 10 females..

Building and Construction (all branches including Government Departments, land development etc). 106 units employ 1454 hands plus 138 working proprietors. There are 47 vacancies. -

Transport and Communications (includes Rail and Road Transport, water transport, Postal and Telegraph Services). 55 units employ 787 men and 116 women, plus 56 working proprietors. The labour content of this group has shown an overall increase since April of 54. Vacancies exist for 74 males and 4 females.

Distribution and Finance (includes wholesale and retail trades, Finance Agencies, Insurance, both private and State). 308 units operate and employ 1197 persons of whom 479 are females. In addition. there are 229 working proprietors. An increase of 37 over the April figure is revealed. Vacancies are open, for 26 males and 28 females.
