Auckland Cup and Railway The early favourites for the Auckland Cup to be decided on Boxing Day, are Foxwyn, Signal Officer, Cracroft, Catterick Bridge and Thornbridge, while for the Railway Handicap Majesty, Flowerburn, Ray’s Pal and Take-a-Lot are in favour. That Penalty Sleepy Fox won the Sheriff Handicap at Avondale under 10.13. For the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie he was then penalised 61b., making his burden 11.2. It has since been announced that he will not compete in this event, but will be reserved for Weight-for-age events. A Record Sum , The amount invested through the totalisator on the New Zealand Cup was a record for the race £32,477. Many northern investors will expect this sum to be beaten by the Auckland Cup total. A Veritable Banana On New Zealand Cup day at Riccarton a Chinese resident of Christchurch who had experienced an exceptionally good trading week with bananas from the Islands and potatoes from Pukekohe, invested £5 each way on Catterick Bridge, and in the presence of several of his enthusiastic countrymen duly collected the record dividend. Caithness Realises 1200 Guineas At the Christchurch Sale of Thoroughbreds thfe Tiderace mare Caithness offered by Mr Peter Louis, of Wellington, was secured by Sir James and W. J. C. Fletcher, of Auckland at 1200gns. It was reported that the mare had broken down during the week, and she was submitted for sale in her absence. Mr E. Montgomery’s brilliant galloper, Verdant, realised 1000 guineas and goes to Timaru. Tuis, was passed in at lOOOgsn.
