LOOKING AHEAD
WHAKATANE’S EXPANSION
TOWN PLANNING SUGGESTED A constructive suggestion by Cr R. Morpeth was discussed by the Borough Council last Monday! This covered the provision for carefully planning ahead in order to accommodate the remarkable expansion of the town and the prospect of having to enlarge the Borough in a southj erly direction. ' _____
Cr Morpeth said that it was becoming more and more apparent that a defined plan for the town’s growth was vitally needed. He pointed out the risk of allowing buildings to go up in the Douglas Street basin, and on lower Alexander Avenue. He pointed out the haphazard growth pf the residential area which had allowed some ten acres off Salonika Street to become landlocked without access. Factories were springing up in the residential sections of the town. Shops should be confined to definite areas. He suggested a small sub-committee to consider this important aspect and report back early in the new year. He was strongly supported by Cr Sullivan who said that it would not be long before the Borough would have to be increased. Any townplanning scheme would cost something, but if it could be completed at £2OO or £3OO he thought the Council should be interested.
Cr Shapley also supported the suggestion maintaining that King Street where there was bound to be a new business section started, should be made one and a half chains wide.
The Council instructed the . Clerk to prepare a report and information on the subject with a view to taking the necessary steps to prepare a plan of development of the. Borough upon approved lines.
