NEW POST OFFICE
FURTHER REPRESENTATIONS
EIGHT YEARS OF PROMISES Periodically representations go forward from this town to the Government urging the long promised" construction of the new Whakatane Post Office. The recent sinking of test piles on the site raised momentary hopes, but following that measure some two months ago nothing further has been heard and the matter was further discussed by the Borough Council last Monday. “It is eight years since we were first told that plans were complete for the building,” said the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) “and it is high time that we were given some consideration. The town has absolutely outgrown the present building and it seems ridiculous to try and carry on.” Cr Shapley said that he noticed other towns with not the same population as Whakatane boasting mag-' nificent Post Offices. Already the local : building was known as ‘The mad’ post office of the Bay of Plenty, and unless the local bodies brought greater pressure to bear Whakatane stood the chance of missing again. Cr Sullivan declared that the whole postal service needed overhauling. He could not understand the need for all the sub-exchanges at .Taneatua, Te Teko and*Matata. Why could they not all be run from a single operating board, thus giving the country districts the benefit of direct contact. ■/'•■'The Council decided to represent the matter to the Postmaster General as a pressing and urgent case, and to seek the backing of the County Council, Harbour Board and the Chamber of Commerce in doing so.
