SACRED CONCERT

CITIZENS’ BAND PERFORMANCE

MUSICAL PROGRAMME PRESENTED

A small but appreciative audience attended the Sacred Concert ®rga«ised by the Whakatane Citizens’ Band, which took place in the Caledonian Hall last Sunday evening. A programme of music was presented, and all items and selections were of a high standard. At a suitable interval, opportunity was taken to present medals won by certain of" the boys at the recent South Auckland contests, staged at Hamilton. To Brian Skelton and Peter Ward went first and second awards respectively for the open championship, whilst the same two, together with L. Breadmore and. K. Jarrett formed the quartette which took the honours. His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, officiated at the ceremony. Further tribute was also paid to the work of Mrs Mayo; she was presented with a beautiful bouquet, on behalf of the Band, by Master Jimmy Miles. The programme which was excellently presented, lacked nothing in continuity or standard. It commenced with a March, “Punchinello” and a Selection, “Souvenirs of Shakespeare.” Miss Dorothy- Stewart next took the stage with a delightful vocal bracket, “The Hymns Of The Old Church Choir” and “The Old Rustic Bridge.” A cornet solo, “Bless This House” and a Minuet, “Berenice” by the Band followed, and after the presentation of medals by His Worship the Mayor, the Band played Handel’s “Largo.” A March, “Gallant Hearts” was followed by an<#ther bracket of songs by Miss Stewart, “Sincerity” and “Love’s Old Sweet Song.” Further selections by the Band, “Scottish Gems” and two Hymns,- “New Rochdale” and “Gracious” followed by the National Anthem, brought the delightful presentation to a close.
