DISTRICT CUBS

DOMINION COMMISSIONER S VISIT RALLY IN WHAKATANE Eighty Cubs joined in giving a rousing reception to the ‘Old Wolf’ Akela, who is none other than Miss Nancy .Wilson, Dominion Commissioner for Wolf Cubs, in the King Street Hall last Tuesday evening. Miss Wilson, who visited the Eastern Bay for the first time expressed her delight at the splendid progress which had been made in the Whakatane district, and complimented all officers associated with the movement on their work. Cub Packs from Edgecumbe, Thornton and Whakatane (2), attended the muster, and. gave Akela a warm introduction by the combined Grand Howl, and several Jungle Dances. Introduced by Commissioner N. Matthews, Miss Wilson had a most interesting talk with the packs, and recounted many of her experiences when she toured the world with the official party, accompanying Lord Baden Powell some years ago. Not the least interesting of her reminiscences was the visit of the Chief Scout to Iceland, when owing to ill-health, he was una'ble to land and greet the boys, as he had elsewhere. The Icelanders provided a fleet of whale boats in which all the Scouts were towed to the waiting liner, and gave the Chief hearty cheers. Several of their number climber aboard with a large stone upon, which they asked B.P. to stand. They pointed out that as their Chief had not been able to land in Iceland, they had brought a piece of Iceland to him. B.P. duly stood upon the stone,. which is now prominent •in a special monument to Scouting in the Icelandic capital. Mr C. Zinsli, Chairman of the Citizens Committee, extended a warm welcome on behalf of the parents and district committee members, and introduced Akela to most of the adults present. Supper. was served by a capable ladies committee, and the evening broke up with cheers for Miss Wilson.
