Band Sacred Concert
A special concert programme will be given by the Citizens Band on Sunday next in the Caledonian Hall, King Street, following church services. Opportunity will be taken to present medals to Band members who were successful in the recent contests.
Basketballers To taifertain The attention of dance patrons is drawn to the advertisement appearing in today’s issue announcing the dance sponsored by the Poroporo Basketball Club, which is to be held in the King Street Hall tomorrow (Saturday, December 7) evening. This can be guaranteed as a night which promises lots of fun for all. Nothing has been stinted—rather the opposite—and with the Premier Band (5-piece for the occasion) supplying popular music, the function is looked upon as being one of the foremost dates in the Basketball entertainment calendar. Actress’ Success It will interest the many friends of Maureen Ross Smith, formerly of Tauranga, to learn that she enthused the critics of her dramatic interpretation of the character of Mrs Alving in Ibsen’s “Ghosts,” which was presented by the Phoenix Society in Auckland on November 25 and November 26. This youthful actress’ convincing portrayal of a middle-aged widow was in itself an achievement, but the insight and skill she displayed was notable. This is her last amateur appearance, as Miss Ross Smith has been chosen to join the “Love in Idleness” company touring New Zealand.
District Cub Rally Arrangements were finalised last evening for the staging of the first district Cub rally in the Whakatane area at Edgecumbe on December 14. It has been felt by the Scouting community for some time, that Cubs have been excluded from Scouting activities, somewhat to their detriment, and a special committee has been promoted for the purpose of putting on a special field day for their benefit. The rally will take the form of a community picnic inters spersed with Cub competitions and games. A ladies committee will see to it that catering for 80 or 90 Cubs, who are expected, will be carried out as it should, and efforts are now being made to establish a suitable trophy for annual competition.
