Old Steamers in News
News of the steamer Hwa Lien, formerly the ferry Maori, is contained in a recent edition of the North China Daily News, which is published in Shanghai. The article states that “with the sailing of the United Corporation of China’s steamer Hwa Lien from the Whangpoo Wharf on October 21, a fast de luxe regular steamship service with North China was inaugurated.” The ship completed her first trip from Shanghai to New Harbour (or Hsin Kiang) in two and a half days, with a full complement of passengers, but without cargo. The Hwa Lien is under the command of Captain S. Barling, who is described as “an old China hand, with 33 years of experience at sea.” According to the Daily News, the ship has accommodation for 1000 passengers, 600 of whom travel in first or second class cabins. The accommodation for second class passengers is described as “easily the best ever seen on the China coast run.”
