Farmers in southern Ontario’s to-bacco-growing belt are planning to use smoke screens laid by aircraft- to protect their tobacco and corn crops from frost damage next year. Frost usually hits about four o’clock in the morning, and farmers will have the smoke screens laid about two hours earlier. In the past many growers have protected their crops by lighting green wood fires around the edges of the fields, but this will be the first aerial assault on the frost menace. Some growers suffered frost losses of up to 50 per cent, this year.

Carpenters’ Dispute A dispute involving the carpenters and joiners employed at the Whakatane Paper Mills was brought before Mr E. L. Walton S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court last, Tuesday. The issue at stake was whether, under the N.Z. Carpenters and Joiners Award, the men employed at the Mill in this capacity were eligible for travelling time. Mr Hackett represented the Inspector of Awards, whilst Mr Alderton represented the Paper Mills. The main facts were put before the Court, and it was decided that the two parties involved should then put their claims in writing. Mr Aiderton pointed out that the issue depended mainly on the clause in -.the award concerning suburban work. In this case, the men performed the -work at the ‘shop of the employer’, and not away from it. The men were all on an hourly rate. After agreeing to the proposal to forward the various claims in writing, the Magistrate adjourned the case till the next sitting on January 21.
