Sharks Attack Whales

An attack on two whales by a school of thresher sharks was seen by the crew of the steamer Ka’itoa when it was 50 miles south of New Plymouth on its way from Onehunga to Nelson. “It was one of the most spectacular whale killings I have ever seen on this coast,” said Mr D. W. Ross, one of the ship’s engineers.. “One of the whales was very large and took a lot of killing. It would stand vertical' on its nose ip the water for long periods, then its tail would come down with a tremendous splash that could be heard half a mile away. There must have been about a dozen thresher sharks, with one under the whale keeping it on the surface, while the other sharks leapt high out of the water and came down with great force on top of the whale.” Mr Ross added that it was the first time he had seen thresher sharks in New Zealand waters, although they were often seen on the west coast of Africa.
