SCOUT RALLY

WHAKATANE DISTRICT TROOPS FIELD DAY AT THORNTON —"Xs The ‘Big Brother’ trophy donated recently for Scout competition by the Thornton Y.F.C. was won by the Thornton Scout troop last Saturday in the first district Rally to be conducted in the Whakatane area for local units. Weather conditions were ideal and there was a good attendance of the interested public The troops taking part were Thornton, Awakeri, Otakiri, Edgecumbe, Citizens and Sea Scouts. The rally took place in ideal surroundings at the Thornton beach and was thoroughly successful in every department. On the aggregate the Thornton troop '(S.M. D. Scott and A.S.M. M. Law) won with 67 points came a good first with Citizens (Whakatane) the runners-up with 60 points.

The other positions were as under: Edgecumbe 46; Otakiri ‘42; Sea Scouts 24; Awakeri 22. The inspection & March Past at 10 a.m. saw a good display of the Scouting youth of the district. The salute was taken "by the County Commissioner in association with • District Commissioner N. Matthews and no time was lost in launching the full programme, with S.M. D. Scott as Rally chief and Mr A. Adams as secretary. Refreshments were served by .the Thornton ladies whilst a number of local residents likewise staffed the field as stewards. Interested visitors from Opotiki included S.M.S Jones and Toone and A.S.M. W. Newall and Messrs. M. Anderson, Parkinson and Lambert.

Billy Boiling (Tenderfoot): Thornton 1, Awakeri 2, Edgecumbe 3, Otakiri 4, Sea Scouts 5, Citizens 6. Semophore:- Thornton 1, Citizens 2, Edgecumbe 3, Otakiri 4.

Morse: Thornton 1, Citizens 2, Otakiri 3. Ambulance (Senior and Junior): Thornton 1, Citizens 2; Edgecumbe 3, Otakiri 4, Awakeri 5. Obstacle Race: Citizens 1, Thornton and Otakiri 2, Edgecumbe 3, Sea Scouts 4, Awakeri 5. Signal Tower: Citizens 1, Thornton 2, Edgecumbe 3, Sea Scouts 4, Otakiri 5.

A well attended concert and social evening in the Thornton Hall followed the Rally, 'the event coinciding happily with the first anniversary of the Thornton troop an occasion which was marked by the presentation and cutting of a beautifully iced birthday cake the hand work of W. Arbuckle, the committee secretary.

The evening passed all too quickly in Scouting games and competitions and concluded with a dance.

Presenting the carved trophy to the Thornton Scoutmaster, Commissioner Matthews said that 'the troop had made remarkable progress and could be depended on to defend it well against all comers at future rallies. He complimented the Scouter, his assistant and the boys on 'their splendid record and paid a warm trbiute to the enthusiasm of the Thornton residents in supporting the troop and Cub pack in the way they did. S.M. Jones of Opotiki, added hsi congratulations after which S.M. Scott responded on behalf of the troop and Mr W. Arbuckle (Committee Chairman) on behalf of the committee.
