'NOVEMBER MEETING HELD I ‘ , SEALING AT TE TEKO Mr J. L. Burnett presided at the .November meeting of the Whakatane County Council which took place last Monday. Present Crs A. McGougan, L. Luxton, W. A. McCracken, C. H. McCready, D. Butler, R. Wardlaw, C. Leslie, W. Hunter, T. G. H. Cawte and F. Burt. The County Clerk (C. G. Lucas) and Engineer (C. H. Brebner) were also in attendance. The P.W.D. District Engineer writing with regard to the sealing of the Te Teko township forwarded a copy of the application from W. Glen and Sons, Storekeepers, Te Teko, and stating that if the council wished to renew its application for r-sealing work in the township in order to keep down the dust nuisance, its request should be submitted, and also a sketch plan together with estimate showing the area which it was considered should be sealed. It was decided to advise the Public Works Department that the council desired sealing of the carriage way 20 feet at least to be proceeded with opposite shops, from the corner ;to past the school and that seeing the road was a State Highway, the District Engineer be asked if his . Department required plans and : specifications and that the council would be thankful if the Public Works Department could treat this sealing as an , urgently necessary work. 1 Galatea Metalling A further letter referring to the metalling of Galatea ro'ads stated that it was realised that the completion of the metalling, was a matter of urgency but unfortunately in ■this financial year funds were lim- ! ited. This meant that up till the end of March next the funds available would only permit of construction work, together with culverting, being carried out, and the actual metalling work would have to be deferred until next financial year. The County had been allocated four grants for this financial year. If it was anticipated that the total amount available would not be spent then the portion which it was considered would be unspent by the 31st March next could be diverted on to metalling work at Galatea, It was decided the Engineer be advised that all council’s Public Works grants would be expended by the 31st March 1947 and that he be asked to make urgent representations * to his Head Office for a special girant for the metalling of Galatea Estate roads. Edgecumbe Township - In response to the council’s enquiry regarding the future of the Edgecumbe township since the site had been condemned, the Department of Lands and Survey advised that the committee set up by the Minister was now in receipt of detailed surveys which would enable them to make a final decision in regard to the future development of Edgecumbe for submission to the Minister by the end of the The council’s co-operation in regard to the restricted issue of building permits was much appreciated. The letter was received.

Two subdivisional plans for the township of Te Teko from Messrs. A. 'Jamieson and'L. B. Smith were approved, in the latter instance the enginebr to report the cost of channelling and kerbing footpath formation.

Manawahe Roads A letter from the Manawahe branch of Federated Farmers of N.Z. expressed appreciation of the council’s action in agreeing to meet for a discussion on road improvements. I Requested that meeting be arranged as soon as possible in order that Councillors may travel over the road in its present condition. It was trusted that no special improvements will be made to the road because of the proposed visit and further that along with the special committee appointed, the Works Committee of the Council attend the proposed meeting with the Manawahe ratepayers. The council agreed to interview Manawahe settlers at Manawahe on December Works Committee day. Kutarere Wharf Cr Wardlaw reported that the ■committee comprising the County Chairman, the speaker and the executive officers, had met representatives of the Opotiki County Council at Kutarere on October 25. No finality was reached in the matter of financing the cost, of repairs to the Kutarere Wharf and approach, it being left to the Opotiki County to submit a detailed estimate. At the meeting the Whakatane representatives had stressed that it was their opinion Opotiki should bear at

least. 3/sths of any maintenance expenses incurred. The report was received. Galatea Aerodrome The Acting Controller of Civil Aviation advised that under paragraph 7 (1) of the Air Navigation Regulations, 1933 Ministerial approval had been given for the use of Galatea Aerodrome until further notice by commercial and private aircraft of the following types:— All light aircraft up to 30001bs. gross weight, D.H. 83, 89, 90, Lockheed 10A, Lodestar, Beech A.T. 11, Beech C. 17. L, Vega Gull, Proctor, Waco. It was therefore not necessary for a license to be issued while the field was available under this authority.
