SCHOOL FLOWER SHOW
A REMARKABLE DISPLAY FRIDAY’S EXHIBITION The annual Flower Show promoted by the Whakatane District High School in which all entries were exhibited by children attending the local school, was held last Friday in the King Street Hall and would have done credit to any floral exhibition by a constituted adult Society anywhere. The whole display was remarkably good and promoters and pupils alike are to be warmly congratulated. Arranged in three long tiers, the display tables reached the full length of the hall and reflected a standard of bloom which did high credit to* the local gardens. In spite of the weather there was a remarkably good attendance and the interest shown by the children in the various sections was a feature throughout the day. The exhibition, now in its third year, is obviously going from strength to strength, each successive show growing in popularity until we anticipate that it will become a feature of the school year in which the whole community will have an unmistakeable interest.
Friday’s show revealed a very fine rose display. There were the aristocrats of the flower garden tastefully arranged and listed. Iceland Poppies, Sweet-Pea, Stock and Gladioli were likewise in good supply. It was however the decorative and floral novelty classes which had captured the imagination of the young exhibitors. The entries this year were so numerous that they occupied the full length of the hall, and were in themselves well worth going to see. Dainty miniature gardens, with looking-glass pools and moss lawns captured the eye of the visitor. The decorated bowls and baskets were also captivating, while the floral sprays and bouquets left little to be desired. Perhaps the greatest effort had been put into the Hospital boxes, which showed a section full of ingenuity and taste. The boxes were really excellent and all entries were deserving of the highest praise. The show was open during the afternoon and evening and afternoon tea was served to visitors during the earlier session. The list of awards was as under:—
