RIVER EROSION

WHAKATANE RIVER REPAIRS j DANGER. TO HIGHWAY Referring to the encroachment of the Whakatane River towards the main highway on the Borough boundary, the P.W.D. (Tauranga) have written the County Council estimating that a further £3OO is required to complete the present repair work now in progress. The Highways Board had agreed to find £l5O, and the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Board £IOO. The Council was asked to find the remaining £SO. Cr McCready contended that the present preventative work was just sufficient to annoy the river, which was building up a fresh sandbank midstream and was likely to cause new scouring. He maintained that the only way to meet and overcome the dangerous erosion now going on was to restore .the river to its original bed. He suggested that the Works Committee should make an inspection of the whole area affected.

The Council decided to make an inspection and to grant the £SO in the meanwhile.
