COMMITTEE’S MONTHLY MEETING
GENERAL BUSINESS DISCUSSED
The monthly meeting of the Whakatane School Committee took place in the High School last Wednesday evening. Present were Messrs. J. W. Wilson (chair), J. H. Duthie, F. Clarke, W. Whittaker, G. H. Dainton and F. W. Lysaght. Apologies were received from Messrs. W. E'. Armstrong, D. Paterson and G. E. Mahy. Accounts for the month totalling £l9 16s sd, representing various purchases on behalf of the school were passed for payment.
Hours For Tennis
A request was received from the Whakatane Tennis Club for an extension of playing time during the coming school holidays. After discussion it was decided to ask the club to make another approach with some definite proposal laid down. Commenting on the matter, the Headmaster (Mr I. B. Hubbard) intimated that it was desirable, if possible, that the school children should have some use of the courts during the holidays, but to do this, it meant that a teacher or some other responsible person had to be present. However, it appeared that this would be possible, so the children would not be excluded from the grounds altogether during the holidays. He also mentioned the fact that several of the school gardens and fences had become knocked about since the club had commenced using the courts, mainly through people taking short cqts, but attributed this more to onlookers than to players. He trusted that this would cease after a short time.
The committee agreed to the "extension of playing time for school children after school hours to 5.30 p.m. Scout Jamboree A letter was received from the Boy Scouts Local Association setting out details of the World Scout Jamboree to be held in France in August 1947, and asking if the committee could contribute in any way towards the expenses of sending three boys from the Whakatane district. The cost, it was intimated, was in the vicinity of £2OO per boy.
After some discussion, it was resolved to contact the Association expressing sympathy with the movement, but pointing out that . the legal position did not allow the committee to donate any of its funds. Members, however, would be pleased to make their own personal donations.
Visiting Committee
The report of the Visiting Committee was received, and minor requirements of the school noted. The committee for December was elected in the : persons of the Chairman and Mr G. H. Dainton. Headmaster’s Report The Headmaster reported that the school rolls for the past month were as follows: High School, 180; Middle School, 347; Infant School, 178 and Ohope Side School 53. Attendances had been adversely affected by mumps and other cases of sickness. Attention was drawn to the work of the caretaker-groundsman and the improvements which had been effected. Details of a scheme to raise from £SOO to £IOOO to be expended on laying out the grounds were explained.
