More Goats

The number of goats in Whakatane was increased by several from the neighbouring kingdom of Whale Island, under the rule of Peter the Whaler, when invading natives, who after attacking from the south and establishing a beach-head at Sulphur Bay returned on twelve month’s leave, bringing several species of this quaint zoological creature, abounding in the domain of the Whale, with them. To prevent them running amok in the crowded thoroughfares of the Metropolis they were without exception attached to their ‘owners’ by short pieces of string.
