FOOD FOR BRITAIN
SCHOOL CHILDREN TO HELP
NEW SCHEME SUGGESTED
By virtue of a special scheme, details of which have been suggested by the Hon. Walter Nash, New Zealand children may shortly have the opportunity of sending food to British children. The scheme which has now been adopted by all members of the British Commonwealth, will be conducted between schools.
The idea, as outlined by Mr Nash was that New Zealand schools should send bulk food gifts to selected schools in Britain. The selection would be made by the British Ministry of Education through local education authorities, with the object of ensuring that the food would go to the areas where it was most needed.
Accompanying the food parcels would be information as to the type of New Zealand school, and other details, which might prove of interest to the British school children. The scheme is an extension of the one already operating through the coupon saving organisation. In this, New Zealand children have played a distinguished. part, particularly in the saving of meat and butter coupons.
It is understood, that when the plan is officially announced, the despatching of the food may be handled in the same manner as bulk cased food is at present under the New Zealand Famine Emergency Committee’s bulk parcel scheme. By this method, the food is cased and forwarded to the nearest Red Cross Depot in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin, where shipping space and documents are attended to.-
