WHITE RHINOCEROS FOUND
WORTH MORE THAN £IOOO
The only white rhinoceros in captivity is now on its way by special road transport to Pretoria Zoo from the Zululand Game Reserve where it was found wandering, apparently deserted by its mother. Though only a week old, it is worth more than £IOOO, as it belongs to the second rarest species of living animals (the first is the Okapi).
The white or Burchel’s rhinoceros is a distinct species now practically extinct. It is thought that at the end of last century there were only half a dozen in existence. This rhinoceroses known to have reached 6|-ft. in height at the shoulder, and a length of 14ft. Its range was always limited, and apparently never extended north of the Zambesi, largely due to the creature’s grass-eating habits. Only one or two skeletons and skins have ever been brought to England. The white rhino, strictly speaking, is not white, but has a slateygrey hide like other rhinos. Unlike other African species, it accumulates much edible fat. Its flesh is said to have been of excellent quality, somewhat resembling beef. The flesh of the calf has been compared with very tender veal.
