THE OTHER FELLOW

The other fellow compared, may be, To him, who the man from Galilee Said was travelling long ago, From Jerusalem to Jericho, And fell among thieves, Who wounded him sore, And left him lying in his gore; And so the immortal story goes, A good Samaritan relieved his woes, While those who should have rendered aid, Were self-consciously afraid Of soiling their hands and reputations, By being seen in such situations, So pride and avarice today, Passes the'fallen by the way, Too self-centred to care or know. The cause of the other fellow’s woe, Which often with its curse, remains On those who multiply their gains, At the dire expense of others, Who are regarded, not as brothers, But stepping stones on which to rise, Nearer that which greedy eyes Regard as most delectable fare, The aftermath of want and care; Upon the rrtetaphoric way, Many robbed and wounded lay, Viewed askance by selfish pride, That passes on the other side; But thrice blessed is, she or he, Whose heart beats with true sympathy, Responding promptly to the appeal, With words and acts that soothe and heal; The kindly thought and word and deed, Are the results of the divine seed, Sown by Him whose wise words read, Your neighbours are those who are most in need. H. SERGANT.
