APPROACHING £40,000,000
AID FOR EX-SERVICEMEN
AUTHORISED EXPENDITURE TO DATE
The latest figure released by the Rehabilitation Board shows, that authorised expenditure for the aid of ex-servicemen and their dependants of the recent war to. re-estab-lish themselves in civil life is approaching .£40,000,000. The actual total of authorisations and expenditure listed below' under various headings came to £37,707,235 at the end of September. A major part of the total is the £27,968,155 authorised loans for the purchase of farms, businesses, homes, furniture, tools of trade, and other minor miscellaneous loans.
The purchase of land for settlerhent, its development and other related expenditure accounts for £5,566,771. Trade and occupational training account for £2,576,262 including £293,306 for farm training. Much of the latter figure represents subsidies on the wages of ex-service-men training with private farmers in order to qualify for the “A” grading which will entitle them to apply for Rehabilitation finance to take up holdings of their own.
Other authorisations made to the end of September were £642,785 foreducation, Rehabilitation allowances £430,482, grants and training blinded ex-servicemen v £32,677, grants and loans to the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establishment League £91,800, special grants £24,303, intermediate scheme (for the training of temporarily disabled ex-servicemen) £19,336, travelling expenses and removals £26,124, and exchange on overseas separation allowances £1094.
Apart from assistance that may have been made available through the ordinary channels, open to Maori and pakeha alike, there has been authorised under the special authorities indicated below the following sums for Maori rehabilitation: Maori Rehabilitation Finance Committee £286,510 (the major part for farming and housing); Native Land Act £21,225; Native Housing Act £19,711.
