ROWING

NEW SEASON OPENS

SATURDAY’S REGATTA

A function modelled along the lines of a regatta, but with a number of added attractions for kiddies, was sponsored by the Whakatane Rowing Club to mark the opening of the new season last Saturday afternoon. Considering the changeable weather, a good crowd was in attendance, and a definite ,‘fun-of-the-fair’ atmosphere was unmistakably apparent. Features of the afternoon were the rowing races, which took the form of three heats, a semi-fi*«l and a final event for the Bergman Trophy. An additional ‘Special’ race was also held over a short course, the crews participating consisting of first-year rowers and high school boys with second-year strokes. On the bank of the river, activities were no less lively, the coconut shy particularly proving an irresistable attraction to the younger generation. A lollie scramble was also a popular, event. In declaring the season open, the Club President, Mr S. H. Tippett, Commented on the growing membership of the organisation. The number of lads now taking part, he said, totalled 30, and there were prospects of a further increase. The financial position of the club was sound and although little rowing had been indulged in during the war years, interest was now being rapidly revived.
