GALATEA SALEYARDS
QUESTION OF SITE
DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL,
A deputation from the Galatea Settlers' Association consisting of Messrs. N. K. Roberts and F. Walsh, waited on the Whakatane County Council at the last meeting of that body, in connection with the unsuitability of the site chosen by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., for new saleyards at Galatea. The locality which had been chosen, it was contended, was too near to the school, and would be a danger to children.
Mr Roberts stated that the request for the yards to be moved farther away, had come from the School Committee which body, however, did not at the time know that the site had already been finalised. The saleyards meant a lot to Galatea, and the settlers did not wish to imperil their construction. Mr Walsh explained that the matter of obtaining saleyards at Galatea had been backed by the Settlers' Association. He had recently spoken to Mr L. H. Brown, Manager of the Loan and Mercantile Company, who had said that the area in question had already been bought.and approved by the Health Department. The objection had come from the School. Committee and not from the Association. Mr Roberts added that the committee would not have objected had they known that the site was already purchased. The main factor against it was that' it was' barely half a mile from the school, and stock would have to pass along the road in front of the school. On the other hand, it was feared that an objection now might jeopardise the construction of the yards. Discussing the matter, Cr McCready was of the opinion that the yards would not be jeopardised by an objection even at this date. The business was there and the Company would certainly not drop the idea of building yards. Cr Wardlaw thought it a great mistake to have the yards on a site where they would endanger the lives of young children. Galatea was a growing settlement and the future should be looked to.
Cr McGougan added that. the school was there first, and he did not think there would be any objection to the shifting of the site. There would certainly be no danger; of losing the yards. ;• > ] Cr McCready: We talk,, of plan-; ning.
