A PUBLIC NUISANCE

CARCASES IN RIVER

MANY DEAD BEASTS

A large number of carcases which have accumulated both in the upper reaches of the Whakatane River, and in the inner harbour are causing a considerable nuisance to business premises and residents in the vicinity.

One which is proving most objectionable, particularly to those at the western end of the Strand, is a beast which has been held on a rock in mid-channel, where it has rested for at least three weeks. At the Heads also, carcases are being washed up on the sand and 'rocks, and are not at all pleasant for picnickers and other parties who make excursions to the point. Last weekend, a sheep, a calf and a dog, all in a high state of decomposition were lying in places where passing close to them was unavoidable. A number of the roads in the Borough also bear distasteful witness to the sudden deaths of a number of small animals which have been knocked down and run over again and again by passing motorists. In the past few days, three hedgehogs, a cat and a number of birds have been noticed gradually being 'runin' to the bitumen.

It is high time steps were taken to remove all such objectionable carcases, the ones in the river particularly, needing first and urgent attention.
