Speaking of the more isolated timber mills in the backblocks, Mr R. Boord, Official Labour candidate for the Bay .of Plenty, said that the modern girl and the modern young man were not prepared to go into the backblocks as had their grandmothers and rough it in a slab hut. The Government was endeavouring to bring the better type of facilities to these isolated places and thus make the work more-' attractive. Factory Workers Enlisted In conversation with Mr C. R. McGlone, Manpower Officer for Bay of Plenty, we Were informed yesterday that in response to an urgent appeal from the Taranaki cheese factories for staff, no less than 56 Maori men volunteered to leave their hdmes and join up with the factories concerned. The men- came mainly from the Eastern Bay, and after several weeks of work were reported by all managers to be doing an excellent job of work.
