PEDIGREE PIGS
DISTRICT PURCHASES MADE
BASIS OF EXPANDING INDUSTRY
J During recent months there has I been a steady inflow of high class I pedigree pigs into the Bay of Plenty I and the area as a whole will ultiImately benefit from the enterprise land farsightedness of the men reI sponsible. For the Berkshire breed Mr I. W. Campbell of Awaroa Station, was responsible for the importation to this district of the Champion Berkshire boar Belmont Royalette. Mr J. Wilson, Galatea, has the choicely bred Berkshire sow~ Belmont Connie which was selected from the New Plymouth Show team of Mr Arthur Revell of Mangatoki, Taranaki. Mr F. H. Waller, also of. Galatea, has the distinction of having purchased a Berkshire sow of identical breeding to the litter team that won the Bay of Plenty District Pig Council Highest Award and the first prize for the highest scoring team of baconers entered by a Young Farmers' Club member for the Bay of Plenty at the Tomoana Baconer Competition held at Westfield on 17th July, 1946. v The Large White breed is well represented by the Large White boar Grinton Excelsior recently purchased at a high price by Mr Boris Black of Opotiki. This boar had been chosen for'export to Australia but shipping was not available. ' The Estate of D. W. Spence, Edge-
cumbe, has had the rare distinction of being able to obtain a Large White boar of the Stanton (H. E. Johnson, Whangarei) strain, the premier bacon strain in the Dominion. Twice now Large White pigs entered by the above-mentioned Estate have won honours at the Tomoana Baconer Competitions and it is hoped that when the new breeding is put into effect the honour of' winning the North Island Challenge Cup will be theirs. i
The Large Black still makes a strong appeal to many breeders and the two recent acquisitions to Mr F. B. Missen's Stud at Opotiki is worthy of detail. To head his stud Mr Missen has made a wide choice in selecting Grin ton Prince V farrowed sth December 1945. He is well grown for, his age, has a strong head and shows plenty of body length; he has exceptionally good legs, strong pasterns and excellent feet, and altogether is a splendid specimen of the breed. His sire is Grinton Weraroa Lord Ist, theVhief stud boar of Mr G. M. Whitelock, Palmerston North, and j his dam is Grinton Constance XI a proven matron in the Stud." His grand-sire Grinton Weraroa Lad 2nd had an undefeated show record, while his imported grand-dam Armsworth Octette 2nd bred in England also had an unbeaten show record. ' The Largp? Black sow that Mr Missen has purchased Ashlea Pakenham Octette sth- farrowed 25th December 1945 was bred by Mr J. H. P. Liggins, Tokomaru, Manawatu. This young sow shows class and breeding in every line having three different strains of imported blood in her great grand-parents. Ashlea Pakenham Renoun Ist grand-dam of this young sow is considered by good judges to be a perfect specimen of the breed and was one of a litter of 10 pigs Officially Recorded that weighed 1501bs at three weeks and 4161bs at eight weeks while her great-grand-dam Grinton Renoun 6th obtained three First Grade Certificates under Official Litter Recording and proved her prolificacy by producing a litter of 19. To these men we extend our warmest congratulations and will look forward to seeing much of this stock exhibited in our local shows in the forthcoming year..
