SmfCESSFVh TOURNAMENT

LABOUR WEEKEND PLAY

Another tournament was concluded on the Whakatane Links on Monday. The weather over the, three days was not the best though the strong westerly wind on Saturday and Sunday provided a great test of skill and judgment. Heavy rain on Monday morning proved too much for most players not occupied in semi-finals.

The Open Championship was won for the second year in succession by F. Fen wick, the 3 handicap player from Poverty Bay. His play was always steady and straight, and although taken to the 20th hole by H. F. Schoen of Akarana in the semi-finals he thoroughly deserved his win. Schoen who plays on a handicap of 4 produced the best medal round of the tournament on Sunday afternoon out in 36 and back in 34, total 70 two under the; scratch score. This is an amatex.'.r record for the Whakatane course.

The final of the Open between E. S. Toogood (Poverty Bay) and F. Fenwick started with Toogood in trouble at 'each of the first three holes. He might have saved the third but his opponent holed a birdie 3. Fenwick took the 6th, lost the 71 h and Bth, won the 9th, was out in 36 and 3 up. Toogood played a glorious shot to the 10th and holed a birdie 3 to win. He also took the 12th and looked like squaring the match at the 14th, but Fenwick holed in 3 from outside and Toogood 3 putted. The next 3 holes were halved in correct figures with Fenwick the winner by 2 and 1. The last hole was played out in par giving Fenwick a round equal to 71 to Toogood's 76.
