COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING

WORK IN DISTRICT

The monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council took place in the County Chambers last Tuesday. Mr J. L. Burnett (chairman) and Crs A. F. McGougan, L. W. Luxton, W. A. McCracken, D. C. Butler, R. F. Wardlaw, R. C. Leslie, W. Hunter, T. G. H. Cawte and F. J. Burt were present. Sale of Dip At a special meeting held prior to "the ordinary meeting, the Council " discussed the matter of selling the cattle dip owned by it at Poroporo, as 'this was no longer required. Discussing the matter, Cr Wardlaw said that there was a fair quantity of Valuable timber and corrugated iron contained in it, and as it was of no further Use, the Council might as well realise on it. It was decided to sell the land and the dip, separately ,or in conjunction according to whichever way proved iflost suitable. Road Estimates Intimation was received from the P.W.D. Tauranga, that the following road grants would be made • available for this financial year:— Herepuru Road £1515 £l-£1 (auth--orised). Millar’s . Road £2OO £l-£1 (authorised). Rewatu Road £ISOO £l-£l. Awaiti Drain Bridge £SOO £l-£l. Ohope Slip Reference to the Ohope hill move-

ment was made when*a letter.was received from the Ohope Progress on behalf of those people directly affected by the threatened ..slip,' thanking the Council for its action, and the attitude of the Engineer (Mr C. H. Brebner). A communication was also received from Mr W. Sullivan M.P. stating that he was pleased to hear that the Council was of his opinion in that trees should be planted on the dangerous .portion, and that he would place the resolution* before the Minister at the ■earliest possible date. Commenting on the matter, Cr MeCready stated that something .should be done as soon as possible.

The people concerned were living in a constant state of nerves, and wanted some protective measures taken immediately. Kutarere Wharf

In reply to the Council’s request that arrangements be made for a •meeting discuss the subject of the request made by the Manager of the

Northern Steamship Co. Ltd. for repairs to the Kutarere wharf building and its road approach, the Opotiki County Council intimated that ;it would be pleased to meet representatives from Whakatane. Afforestation

In connection with the question of the prospect of further sawmills operating near Te Whaiti, intimation was received from the Director

of Forestry that logs to supply these

mills would come out of Whirinaki State Forest, in the vicinity of Te' Whaiti. Felling and extraction were

carried out under the strictest sup-

ervision. Fire prevention had received the closest attention and the importance of maintaining a thrifty vegetative covering on the land comprising' the upper catchment <of the Whirinaki River was fully real-, ised.

It was decided to ask the Director

if he would authorise an inspection by a committee of the council, of : the worked-over Te Whaiti areas referred to in his letter. Taneatua Pound

Cr McGougan reported that an in-

spection of the Taneatua cemetery area which was thought to be suitable for surplus pound stock, had been made. Mr Reeves had the lease of approximately 9 acres of the •cemetery at £5 per annum rental, but he would prefer to abandon his cemetery . lease in Council’s favour rather than have any of his freehold

land taken under the Public Works

Act. Cemetery Trustees, Cr MciCready added, would be prepared for the Council to have lease of the land (9 acres) at the rental of £5 per annum, 5 year lease, with right of renewal, the Council to finish fencing of the area and level a further area of the cemetery for graves.
