REHABILITATION AID
COOK ISLANDS AND WESTERN SAMOA ELIGIBILITY EXTENDED Extension of eligibility to ex-ser-vicemen of the Cook Islands group and Western Samoa is announced by the Rehabilitation Board. Assistance may be provided either in New Zealand or in the islands, but in the latter case it will be conditioned by the applicability to local conditions, and each case will be dealt with on its individual merits. The extension covers ex-service-men who served with the forces of the British Empire or her allies in the recent war outside Samoa or the Cook Islands. Those who saw service within New Zealand are treated on the same basis as New Zealand home-servicemen, while those who served outside the Dominion on their own islands are treated similarly to New Zealanders who served overseas.
Other qualifications are that applicants be ex-servicemen who were ordinarily residents of the two island territories during their service or had previously been so for over ten years continuously or in broken periods. Arrangements have been made for applications for rehabilitation assistance to be received from the Resident Commissioner at Niue and Raratonga and by the Administrator of. Western Samoa. From residents of the islands now in New Zealand applications will be received at district Rehabilitation offices.
Although Western Samoa is not financially dependent on New Zealand, it is nevertheless mandated territory under New Zealand administration. The Cook Islands are, of course, constitutionally a part of New Zealand.,
