STUDIO CHATTER
—o A FEATURE COLUMN “ARSENIC AND OLD LACE” Good Luck Charm The dainty lace handkerchief carried by Faye Emerson at some time or other in every picture she makes at Warner’s, as a good luck charm, once belonged to that greatest of romantic actresses, Sarah Bernhardt. No Delinquency In Hollywood where 1500 youths who work regularly in motion pictures live, there has not been a single reported case of delinquency in the past year. This is accredited by sociologists to the interest maintained by them in their work. Country Bred" Gary Cooper is a seat-of-the-pants-match-scraper. Mrs Cooper tried to break her son of this habit once by giving him a fancj' gold lighter as he boarded the train for a visit away. Cooper, with his first cigarette, tried the lighter on the seat of his pants, and when it didn’t work, he remembered to press the button. : Then his reflex got the best of his memory. Cigarette well alight, he , tossed the lighter out of the window!
A Dead Existence
Zachary Scott was brought to Hollywood a few seasons ago, and has been dying ever since. The actor’s first screen appearance was in ‘The Mask of Dimitrios’, and he was a corpse in the first reel. In ‘Mildred Pearce’, in which he co-stars with Joan. Crawford and Jack Carson, he dies again. It is his just due for the villainous parts he plays. Scott is a sleek, romantic rogue. In spite of his good looks, you can’t help but approve when someone mows him down with a bullet.
REGENT “Arsenic And Old Lace” (Mon. 28, Tues. 29, Wed. 30). It is a singular fact, that every person who has seen this picture recommends it as one of the funniest shows to come to the screen. Regular picture goers, returned men who saw it overseas, previewers and critics, all claim it as being sheer entertainment . delight. Actually it is one of the highest quality comedies to come from the Warner Bros, studios, and received the consideration of the company’s most experienced and skilled advisors. Really, it is a great picture, and a milestone in the advance of moviemaking. It is definitely a must-see for all audiences. “Wonderman” And shortly to grace the Regent screen, is another laugh raiser. We refer, of course, to the film “Wonderman” which stars Danny Kaye, the new actor-comedian who in one picture jumped to the top of box office attractions. Kaye is a peculiar mixture. His ability at straight dramatic acting is a solid foundation, on which is built one of the best comedian characters the screen has known. With this picture, in which he plays a dual role, we feel that his reputation will definitely be made in New Zealand, as it was in his own country, the U.S.A.
