SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE
SENIOR AND JUNIOR EVENTS BOTH RECORDS TO CHADWICK The annual steeplechase of the secondary department of the Wha.katane District High School was held last week in fine weather. The courses were the same as in previous years, over 40 Juniors and 30 Seniors taking part. The juniors started first and began to, arrive home soon after the last of the seniors was away. The first half-dozen to finish were T. Windley (62 minutes) 1, T. Waterhouse (7min) 2, C. Griffiths (Oimin) 3, P. Walker (7min) 4,T. McCoy (6imin) 5, and J. Weston (7 min) 6. Fastest time was secured by S. Cameron from scratch, who ran the distance in 22 minutes 30 seconds. In the senior event A. Murphy 9mins) was first to finish, followed by T. Stewart (6min), K. Print (9 mins), D. McKenzie (62-mins), M. Ridell and J. Chadwick (h min). Chadwick secured fastest time, 24 minutes 57 seconds, and set a new record for the course in so doing. He now holds both senior and junior records for the event. Total house points scored during the afternoon were: Matanga 354, Hau Hau 263, Orakau 250, Tera 212.
to form a second train. She carried a trailing bouquet of orchids, carnations 'and roses tinted with pink and maiden hair fern. Mrs Prescot attended as Matron of Honour, and Miss Joyce Hodgson, niece of the bride, as bridesmaid. Both were frocked alike in pink cloque, fitting bodices finished with tiny buttons down the back and silver bugle beads embroidered on the front of the bodices. Short sleeves and elbow length pink net mittens were worn. The skirts were full length and full. Juliet caps of real pink and blue flowers matched their powder bouquets of carnations, blue argentine pea and maiden hair fern. The little flower girl, Marlene Wardlaw, niece of the bride, was frocked in the same manner as the Matron of Honour and bridesmaid, in pink cloque and Juliet cap and carried a dainty horse shoe of pink and blue flowers. The bridegroom was attended by Mr Prescot ds best man, and Lieutenant Halley as groomsman. As the newly-weds were leaving the church, a small girl presented them with a lucky horseshoe.
A reception was held in the Waimana Hall, where Mi’s Bell, assisted by Mr and Mrs McDonald received over 300 guests. Mrs Bell wore a smart black ensemble, relieved with touches of white and a black hat and matching accessories and a shoulder spray of red carnations to tone. The bridegroom’s mother, Mrs McDonald, also wore a becoming black suit and black accessories and a spray of white carnations and fern worn in her coat lapel. The toastmaster was the Rev. Liggett and the usual toasts were duly honoured. The beautiful three-tiered wedding cake held pride of place on the bridal table. The flowers used for the hall and table decorations were pink peach blossom, anemones and carnations. While the cake was being cut, Mr Lyall Abbot sang “O Promise Me.” The best man read numerous telegrams of congratulations and good wishes. The guests were' later entertained at a bright dance in the hall. The young couple left on a motor tour of the North Island, the bi’ide wearing a sapphire blue suit and black accessories.
