RED CROSS SOCIETY

WHAKATANE BRANCH MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting ox the above was held in the Red Cross Rooms on Tuesday, October 8, Mrs Sullivan presiding. A letter was received from the Waikato Centre reporting on food sent to Britain. It was decided to write thanking the Waikato Centre, and also to send congratulations to Major Gibbons, President of the Centre, on his appointment as chairman of the Dominion Executive. Major Gibbons will be remembered by those present at the opening of the Red Cross Rooms as the guest speaker representing Headquarters. It was decided that the committee put before the public meeting the suggestion that the War. Memorial take the form of a building to benefit Youth, particularly as a hall combined with a hostel and social rooms. Mrs Winstone said members would be interested to know that Mr King-sley-Smith had told her that the collection of fat organised by CORSO now amounted to over half a ton and would be despatched in the next few days. Mrs Winstone said the most important fact arising out of the annual meeting was Mr White’s report on the Conference in Europe of the League of Red Cross Societies, when the future work of the National Societies was outlined and the need for the strengthening of the financial side stressed. Accordingly the Whakatane sub-centre decided to aim at raising the sum of £SO towards the finance of the N.Z. Red Cross Society. Mrs Winstone said she promised other Centres at the annual meeting that the Eastern Bay of Plenty Centre would give them all a “run for their money” in proportion to membership. This Centre had been praised at the meet- > ing for acquiring its own Headquarters and also for being a very “live” Centre. ‘Since June the rooms had been in use several clays a week, and as well as Home Nursing classes a total of approximately 2000 garments had been sorted repaired, or newly made and despatched from the rooms. This total included the 700 odd garments packed in conjunction with the lady Galway Guild and the Women’s Institute in connection with the CORSO appeal
