RACING NEWS & VIEWS

The Harcourt Stakes Soneri, the Canterbury Winter Cup winner, is to contest the Harcourt Stakes at Awapuni this month. Changed Hands The Defaulter—Enchant colt, Omit, owner in Hawke’s Bay, changed hands last week at 1250 guineas. Golden Souvenir At Riccarton Golden Souvenir is getting through his track work so solidly that he is expected to get on the winning list again shortly. It is intended to race him at the Wellington meeting this month. The Leading Jockey For the coveted honour of being the leading jockey this racing season W. J. Broughton leads with 16 wins, N. B. Holland being a close second with 12. The Steeplechase The Hastings jumper, Kilrnanagh, is to contest the steeplechase at Ellerslie on the second day, and is sure to be solidly supported. The present favourite is Aga Kay from New Plymouth. Spectacular Betting A prominent horse owner of Melbourne, Mr Arthur Bowring, recently became one of Australia’s betting highlights. He backed Shannon, with his own candidate, Good Idea, for the Epsom and Metropolitan double, to win the colossal sum of £250,000. As is now recorded in turf history Shannon was left fully 12 lengths in the Epsom, and with a truly brilliant and well sustained finishing run, was beaten a short head. Thus the first leg of the double settled all hope of a great financial win. The Hawke’s Bay Guineas Revived after a period of 16 years the Hawke’s Bay Guineas last week went to Opulent, and justified the opinion of many keen sportsmen who in, recent weeks considered him “the good thing.” For many years this event was won by New Zealand’s best three year olds, and the best were indeed good, even with a capital G. Back to Australia The Foxbridge—Royal Mistake three year old, Royal Regret, that has been operated on for respiratory trouble at Auckland, is being returned to Melbourne to join the team presided over by Stan Reid at Caulfield. He is owned by Mr E. Phillips, of Melbourne, who has invested many thousands of pounds in New Zealand thoroughbreds.
