Busy Friday
“More like Queen Street every day,” was the casual remark of many shoppers in the Strand last Friday, when a particularly large crowd was in town. Doubtless the day for the drawing of the family benefit had something to do with it, but the Post Office was not the only busy establishment. In and out of almost every shop, a constant stream of purchasers flowed, and the whole town had a brisk business air. Salary Rise Not Permitted Eyebrows were raised and general surprise registered on the faces of the City Fathers at the Borough Council meeting last Monday evening when a communication from the Director of Stabilisation 1 refused to sanction the recent decision of the Council to mark the promotion of Mr D. J. Wilson on his appointment to the position of Assistant Town Clerk by raising his salary from £358 to £4OO per annum. The Director agreed only to the figure being lifted to £375. • Family Benefit Day Friday was very obviously family benefit day ,and all who required to use the post office, particularly during the early afternoon, were faced with the fact in no uncertain manner. During the morning, the office was packed,, whilst members of the family representative. collecting the allowance in each case, used the Private Box lobby„as a convenient waiting room. In the afternoon, things were not much brighter, a queue streching from the top counter down the full length of ,the wall' to the door. „ The worst thing we could imagine, when we looked at the very slowly (almost imperceptibly) moving queue, was spending three hours to get to the counter and then being told: “Next counter please!” '
