Prior to the commencement of the business of last Monday evening’s meeting of the Borough Council His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) referred in fitting terms to the death of Mr G. A. Brabant, the first Mayor of the town. He stated that after servinfg for some years as.a member of the Town Board, the late Mr Brabant in 1917 became Mayor when Whakatane was constituted a Borough. He had also a long period of service on the Harbour Board, and was District Coroner for many years. He was also the Senior Justice of the town. On the Mayor’s motion the Council decided to forward a letter of deep sympathy to the Brabant family.
