TRIBUTE TO LONDON
MUNICIPALITIES OF N.Z. ROOM OF NATIVE WOODS An interesting letter from the N.Z. Municipal Association was received by the Whakatane Borough Council, last Monday evening. It was proposed that all Municipalities combine by donating money on the basis of £3 per 1000 of their populations towards a suitable memorial gesture, in honour of the fortitude displayed by the people of London during the war. In this manner it was estimated that the sum of £2500 would be raised. The suggestion was made that the money should be forwarded to the Lord Mayor of London requesting that it be expended in panelling a room of the Guild Hall with N.Z. woods and also of furnishing it with selected N.Z, timber. The Whakatane Council was asked if it was willing to contribute on the above basis. The Council unanimously agreed to meet the suggestion warmly applauding; the project.
