THE CRICKET PITCH

ASSISTANCE TO RETURF BOROUGH COUNCIL’S INTEREST “If we can make this pitch suitable for important games, we will be able to see most of the rep. cricket fixtures played in Whakatane,” said Cr H. Warren at the Borough Council meeting last Monday evening, when supporting a letter from the Whakatane Cricket Association. Cr Warren pointed out that Whakatane was the headquarters of the Bay of Plenty Cricket Association and deserved to have proper playing facilities. The question of returfing the wicket, was he declared too big a one for the local Association to tackle and it should be assisted towards that end.

Cr Spring considered the idea of returfing came too late in the season. He was in full sympathy with the cricketers however and suggested that the ends T>f the present pitch be graded off and that a start on returfing be made next year at the correct time—about April or May. Until a properly built and levelled pitch could be constructed cricket' would never be able to be played here, as it should be played. The whole matter boiled down to one of finance.

The matter was referred to the Works Committee Chairman to offer what assistance he could to the Association.
