ROADS IN GREECE

CORSO WORKER’S TERSE, - TRIBUTE BRUCE WATTS MENTIONED As was anticipated, road communications are proving one of the greatest trials to the CORSO relief workers in Gi’eece, especially to those who are travelling extensively over the roads of Eastern and Western Macedonia. Describing her journey from Athens to Kozani (north of Mt. Olympus) Dr. Sylvia Chapman, the Unit’s Leader, wrote: “We had heard a good deal about the roads in, Greece being , bad. This road varied from bad to indescribable.” Another letter from Mr J. A. Horne, Administrative Officer, pays terse tribute to another road in Western Macedonia.

“The road to Servia,” he writes, “is moderately good as roads go out here, but beyond Seiwia it is not so good. Only a four-wheel drive; vehicle could tackle the journey, and - then only in dry weather. After leaving the Athens main road you ‘ begin to wonder if the driver really does know the way, and it is not long before you get him to stop frequently and enquire from passing, peasants if this is a road or just a shortcut mule track. In places it disap- A pears completely, and you are driving over paddocks looking for anything resembling a track. After a little game of hide and seek, you find it again and it eventually decides to behave and take you to your destination.” . Fortunately in Mii Bruce Watts, Transport Officer, and several other members of the CORSO Unit, the teams working in Macedonia haveexpert mechanics on call for maintenance and repair work.
