Condition of Highway Comment was made at the recent meeting of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce on the state of the highway between Opotiki and Whakatane. Since the meeting .members:’ of the chamber have travelled over the road and state that the condition of the road between Opotiki . and the Waimana turn-off is greatly improved as the result of the planer smoothing out the road. The main complaint in connection with. the road is on the other side of the Waimana turn-off. «. The Public Works engineer, Mr Wilson, has always shown a., willingness to co,-.. operate with the chamber in matters such as this, and his interest is appreciated by the chamber.'

South Island Incident
Illustrating the shortsightedness of the authorities with regard to the nursing profession, Mr HI C. McCready at Thursday’s meeting of' the Whakatane Hospital Board said that the Medical Officer in charge of the Invercargill Hospital had trained several male nurses in order to offset the shortage of females. For; his pains he had received a letter from the Health Department alleging that he was breaking the law and . would have to stop the practice. - The doctor wired back: “What am I - to dd with my patients—gas them?” He had not received any *; further communication to date.
