Odd Cycle At 5 p.m. last Wenesday, a stranger figure mounted on a high one-wheel-ed bicycle joined the crowd of workers leaving town on their way home,... and ‘tootled’ (no other word will describe it) round in. the street for a few minutes. Naturally, he wasthe centre of attraction. The rider later that evening turned out to be Bi Ko, a member of the cast of Eastern Follies' which played in the Grand Theatre on that night. t Crop of Bonny. Babies >

Members of the visiting committee (Messrs. Caulfield and Burt) reporting to the Whakatane Hospital Board on Thursday both remarked on the ‘crop of bonny babies’ now to be seen in the Annexe nursery. “It augurs well for the population of our district,” observed Mr Burt, who went on to say that there were forty-four in there last month and he understood that for October some fifty were expected.

Caledonian New Year’s Sports Special permit has been granted to the Whakatane Caledonian Society to run their Highland Section at Ohope Beach on New Year’s Dayi The Society is already busy with its programme, which promises to eclipse all previous ones. Promises have been received from Hamilton, Rotorua and'Tauranga Bands that they intend competing in the various events while from all parts of the Province dancers- and athletic competitors are expected as well.

Scrub Fire A small scrub fire which broke out on Hillcrest.in the gully to the right of the main route was the cause of the siren sounding shortly. before midday on Monday. The Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade attended, but it was found unnecessary to take any combative measures, the fire being allowed to burn itself out. The cause is unknown. With the approach of summer, residents are warned to be doubly careful concerning anything which may cause a fire.

Gymnasium Dance A highlight of the entertain- \ ment calendar, publicised at short notice, is the dance sponsored by the local Gymnasium i. Club, which takes place in the Caledonian Hall tonight, Friday, October 11th. Patrons will well remember previous functions run by the same group : and the novel touches invariably introduced. This time the lads will again undoubtedly have a few surprises. Altogether, from what we have so far gleaned, the dance will be one well worth attending, and we highly - recommend all dance fans to make a point of including it in their list of engagements. Unusual Activity on White Island Watchers who noticed the steam rising from White Island yesterday were surprised to• note the unusual, quarter from whence the main column of steam arose. Instead of the heavy clouds billowing up from the middle of the crater, the heaviest plumes ascended, from the most . southerly tip of the island—almost from the sea itself. Calculations show that this quarter, usually quiescent, "is approximately where ■ the old refinery and whaif stand. It would be unprecedented if the crater had opened a new vent in that locality but as has been proven ' so dramatically in the past, the activity is so confined on the island that fresh steam vents are liable to break out anywhere.

Oh ope Spotlight Freddie Burt’s rhythm and tire surroundings of the Cabaret were the Saturday night targets for followers of modern music and modern dancing, who made Ohope. their rendezvous for both. During the evening, the spotlight centred on a wedding ■ party the members- of which were -thoroughly -’enjoying themselves. Dr. and Mrs Cole were host and hostess, and guests included Mr and Mrs West, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Mr and Mrs Hay, Mr and Mrs Corbett, Mr and Mrs Coates (Hawke’s Bay)', Miss Grace Brown, Miss Rowena Woods, and Miss Betty Dean.
