SWIMMING

NEED FOR BATHS

HARBOUR BOARD’S INTEREST

With the object of assisting the local Amateur Swimming Club, the Whakatane Harbour Board, at its last meeting, discussed the question of the selection of a site for swimming baths, and also the matter of erecting some form of temporary enclosure which could be utilised in the meantime.

Two letters dealing with the question were before the Board. One, from the Public Works Department, Auckland, intimated that the nets which were available were entirely unsuitable for enclosing part of the river as the mesh was practically 4ft., and differed considerably from ordinary torpedo net. The other was from the Whakatane Borough Council, asking if the Board was prepared to set aside the piece of land between the Children’s Playground and the County Depot with street frontages to the Strand and Quay •Street as a swimming bath reserve. The area, it was pointed out, was most- suitable, as not only could fresh.water could be conveyed from the Wairere Stream, but also, it was a good situation for the holding of swimming carnivals. Reporting on behalf of the sub•committee which had inspected several sites, the chairman (Mr W. R. Boon) said that the section suggested by thq Borough Council had been viewed, and it appeared as if the r County Council was using it merely as a convenience. In his opinion, however, it would not be wise to proceed with the final selection of a ■site until it was known where the new road was going through. There was every chance that a better site would present itself. In the meantime, the Borough Council could be ■assured that nothing else would be done with the section suggested by them. Mr H. G. Warren added that as a member of the sub-committee and also a representative of the Borough Council, he thought the proposal for a swimming bath a very sound one. The development of the waterfront and its surroundings was going to be considerable within the next few years, and the site suggested by the Swimming Club was certainly a good one. He too, however, thought that it would be wise to wait until the new road was surveyed before .the work was proceeded with. With regard to the temporary site, he continued, one had been selected adjacent to Bridger’s furniture factory where it had been thought to utilise part of the river, but it had been pointed out that this was unsuitable owing to the sewerage which emptied into the river near that point. The club, for its part, had suggested a site at the end of Landing Road requesting that part of the river be fenced off as added protection for children, some seventy of whom had received instruction in swimming during last season’s learn-to-swim week. The only objection to this site, he concluded, was that during a fresh, logs might sweep down the river and carry any structure away. It was decided to refer the matter back to the sub-committee for iurther inspection.
