ROWING CLUB SHED

PROTECTION FROM EROSION STRENGTHENING WITH ROCK At the last meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board, a letter was received from the Rowing Club stating that considerable sums of money had recently been spent on repairs to the boat shed, which had suffered from ravages of storms and the river, and suggesting that to save fuxffher erosion, a retaining wall be constructed along the length of the shed commencing from the bridge.

The secretary added, that with the chairman’s authority, a letter had been directed to the Rowing Club stating that the Board, without recognising any responsibility in the matter of protecting the rowing shed intended to build up underneath the shed with rock, and to build a low wall on the seaward side of the shed*. Such work was to be undertaken as curcumstances permitted. Advice had subsequently been received from the club that if the rock were dumped in the vicinity of the shed, the members of the club would be pleased to do the placing. The Chaiiman (Mr W. R. Boon): Getting the rock under the shed is the main part of the job. Mr H. G. Warren: This is another case where our support should be given. The Rowing Club is a very active organisation in the town; I have no doubt that if the material were made available the job would be carried out satisfactorily. It was decided that the necessary rock should be delivered to the shed as soon as possible provided the work of placing it were performed under the supervision of the Board’s consulting engineer.
