BLACKSMITHS AND FARRIERS

REHABILITATION TRAINING The Rehaoilitation Board announces that it has included the trades of farrier and blacksmith among those to which it is willing to apply its subsidised training arrangements for suitable ex-servicemen. The training period has been laid down as 104 weeks, divided into four 26week terms, wages rising from £5 15s gross in the first term to £6 5s in the last, after which ruling tradesmen’s rates shall apply or the rate paid in the last training tei’m, whichever is the higher. Wages will be subsidised during training on the sliding scale principle, by which the employer’s proportion increases as the training lengthens. The Board’s decision followed a recent survey of the two trades, which confirmed reports that there were shortages of blacksmiths and farriers in various parts of New Zealand, there being opportunities offering which might be of interest to ex-servicemen as trainees, employees, and as proprietors of their own businesses. Before approving an individual application in these trades, the Board will, following its usual policy, make sure that the particular opening offers a reasonable and permanent livelihood.
